BPC-157·US LEGAL STATUS·LAST CHECKED 12 OCT 2026

Is BPC-157 legal?

Not as a drug. BPC-157 has no FDA approval, so selling it for human use breaks federal drug law, and a 'research use only' label does not protect a seller whose site signals human use. It is not a controlled substance, and possessing it is not a federal crime. An FDA advisory committee recommended it for pharmacy compounding in July 2026, but FDA has not acted, so pharmacies still cannot compound it.

503A Bulks List: pcac recommended
Not eligible as of 12 Oct 2026. FDA removed BPC-157 from Category 2 on 15 Apr 2026 after the nominations were withdrawn. On 23 Jul 2026 the PCAC recommended adding it to the 503A Bulks List for ulcerative colitis. The vote is advisory; FDA has published no proposed rule and no interim Category 1 decision. The Washington Post reported on 7 Oct 2026 an unannounced HHS plan to allow temporary compounding of some of these peptides; FDA and HHS had issued nothing as of 12 Oct 2026.

Research-use-only posture: RUO label has been repeatedly rejected by FDA in warning letters when human-use intent is evident. The Warrior Labz case progressed to a criminal conviction.
Personal possession: Not federally scheduled; possession is not federally criminalized. Customs interdiction of imported peptide vials is common per FDA Import Alerts.

State rules

2 STATES
pharmacy board enforcement · Ohio

Ohio's Board of Pharmacy states that peptides such as BPC-157 'cannot be compounded because it violates federal and state law', and that clinics and med spas may not possess any drug labelled 'for research purposes only', whatever the patient consents to.

BPC-157 in Ohio

compounding restriction · Indiana

Since 1 Jul 2026 Indiana law (IC 16-42-22.5) bars compounding from research-grade or veterinary-grade bulk ingredients outside an IRB-approved study and requires an FDA-registered source with a certificate of analysis. From 1 Jan 2027 medical spas must register with the state medical board. This matters if FDA later allows pharmacies to compound BPC-157: in Indiana the ingredient could not be research grade.

In the other states we found nothing that names BPC-157; federal law applies.
