Is Tirzepatide legal?
Yes, as a prescription drug: FDA has approved it (Mounjaro, Zepbound). A vial sold as a 'research peptide' is not the approved product, and selling it for human use breaks federal drug law. Pharmacies may compound it only when the product is not a copy of the approved drug.

State rules
6 STATESCalifornia's pharmacy rules, adopted 17 Jun 2025, treat any compounded drug with the same active ingredient as a commercial product as 'essentially a copy' unless the pharmacist documents a clinically significant difference for the patient. That is stricter than FDA's test, which also looks at strength and route.
Mississippi's Board of Medical Licensure rule (Part 2640, Rule 1.5(F)) bars off-label use of any drug not FDA-approved for weight loss when given solely for weight loss. Zepbound is approved for weight loss; Mounjaro is not.

Questions
3 ANSWERSIs Tirzepatide legal in the US?
Yes, as a prescription drug: FDA has approved it (Mounjaro, Zepbound). A vial sold as a 'research peptide' is not the approved product, and selling it for human use breaks federal drug law. Pharmacies may compound it only when the product is not a copy of the approved drug.
Can a pharmacy compound Tirzepatide?
Component of an approved drug, so a 503A pharmacy may compound it only when the result is not 'essentially a copy' of Mounjaro or Zepbound. FDA's shortage-period discretion ended 18 Feb 2025 (503A) and 19 Mar 2025 (503B). FDA proposed on 1 May 2026 to exclude tirzepatide from the 503B clinical-need list; the comment period was extended and closed 30 Jul 2026, and no final notice was in the Federal Register as of 12 Oct 2026.
Is Tirzepatide banned in sport?
It is not on the WADA 2026 Prohibited List. GLP-1 receptor agonists are not on the 2026 or the 2027 Prohibited List. WADA's 2027 Monitoring Program names tirzepatide, which tracks use but does not ban it.
